I think that we need another wave of 80s metal like Van Halen or Guns N'Roses, back when rock n'roll was all about the parties and having a good time. This new stuff is too depressing(but some of it is still good). Rock is about getting away from all the depressing crap. I play guitar in a metal band called Revenant.

I love Jimi Hendrix but I was wondering just what it is that makes him so popular.

HE played better songs, and innovated in guitar playing

Hendrix had a style of playing guitar like no other. He played a right handed guitar left handed and didn't change the set up of the guitar. He then became a genius player. His music was innovative and beautiful. His stage shows were something else. He would have been god status had he lived a while longer. RIP Hendrix. A legend.

Bollox! i hope that wos sarcasm, Hendrix is one of the only guitarists that played the guitar as though it wer another limb attached to his body, he just had the natural feel for it and his songs sounded the absolute bollocks! The reason he wos so popular was cos his songs wer quite varied in sound, nobody ever knew wher he wos going - he could write a near instrumental blues/shred song or a near pop jive that anyone can dance to. I watch a local band named Stalker and they play quite a few Hendrix songs as well as their own and the people that go to the gigs like all kinds of genres, evryone is interested in the Hendrix stuff - its almost as if Purple Haze is a kind of mist that nobody can see which was created by Jimi to get into peoples minds and show them a good time!

R.I.P - J.Hendrix

unlike most guitarists, the guitar isn't hendrix' tool, there to be shredded and played as fast as possible. Like others here have said, ot's an extension of him... nobody came, or comes, close to Jimi when it comes to soulful, intuitive guitar playing. Add to that the innovation, improvisation, and all round rock awesomeness, and you might get close to explaining what makes him such a compelling guitar player; then the voice, of course, way cooler than most rock vocalists

but you can't really define Hendrix and his talent, like most true geniuses (as opposed to 'mere' maestros) you can't quite put your finger on what gives a genius his spark

hendrix isnt technically very good at playing guitar, his solos are mostly very simple and easy to play. what he IS good at is song composition, which in my opinion is why he is so great. that and the fact hes such a rockin brere.

I dont no about that, i mean ther r sum guitarists out ther tht do come very close to Hendrix in the sense of guitar playing quality, i mean lets start with Stevie Ray Vaughan he had a similar sort of talent for the instrument. Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd also didn't have blistering pace however he could pull off a solo with so much feeling in the bends and phrases that he didn't need to hav the speed to sound awesome. And obviously youv got Steve Vai and Joe Satriani who if u watch play with such a range of speed, phrases and feeling, its not fair to say that Hendrix had something special that they havnt got, just he wos the first person to bend the rules of guitar playing beyond the known limit, he wos an awesome composer and his tunes make ur heart do summersaults in your chest, therfore being the first taster of this kind of music i think that he has become a more memorable legend being the milestone to which others have followed.
