Black Metal - Similar to death with often higher vocals, more electronics, and more pride of race. Example - Burzum
British - Take a fucking guess genius
Doom - Lower, often slowe, known usually as the heaviest type of music
Example - Anathema
Fusion - Well tbh, I have no idea, but I'm guessing a fiusion of styles, so think RATM.
Gothic - Music based around ACTUAL goths, not mallgoths. So pessimisticy, make-up, etc. Goth rock is like The Cure, Type-O-Negative, etc.
Grindcore - Fas-paced shredfests, very "brutal". Do anythign you cna as fast as you can, most songs are shorter than 30 seconds.
Industrial - Usually electronic, heavy drum beats. Industrial rock - NIN
Nu-metal - Hiphop influenced metal. Eg. Linkin Park
Rap Metal - Metal with rap vocals, eg. Candiria, RATM
Tecnical - Tommy
Power - Fucking cheesecore of mythology, high vocals, and general pansiness. Eg. Dragonforce, Kamelot
Melodic-Death - Death metal but slower and generally calmer. Eg. OPETH \m/, Dark Tranquility
Death - Very Heavy metal with screamo-vocals and lyrics about detah believe it or not. Eg. Pre-Angela Arch Enemy
Hair Metal - Probably teh lightest genre, but since it's 80s stuff, it was heavy in its time. Eg Skidrow
Opera Metal - Metal with friggin opera vocals duh. Eg. Tristania
Progressive Metal - Very techincal musicians who usually can't write a song to save their lives with the exception of Tool. Eg. Dream Theater
Punk-metal - Punk influenced metal. Dunno maybe something like Antiflag or Refused.
Some of them are pointless and mean the almost same as others, eg. Shred, Speed, Medgrind, Shitgrind, etc..
And I can't be arsed to do the rest.

Alternative Metal Experimental Heavy Metal with many different influences. Examples: Neurosis, Faith No More.
Black Metal - Dissonant riffs, shrieking vocals, not many solos, chaotic and raw sound and dark atmosphere. Sometimes keyboards are used. Lyrically its very limited, basically about Satanism, Paganism, war, death. Genre started by Venom from England in 1981. Examples of pure Black Metal bands: Mayhem, Marduk, 1349.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Symphonic Black Metal - Slower Black Metal with many symphonic parts, sometimes clean male or female vocals. Examples: Dimmu Borgir, Anorexia Nervosa.
- Industrial Black Metal Black Metal full of electronic and industrial arrangements. Examples: Abyss, Tidfall.
- Black/Thrash Metal All primitive Black Metal, such as Venom or Celtic Frost falls in here, because Black Metal has its roots in Thrash Metal.
Death Metal - Brutal and fast music. Strong rhythmic section (drums are extremely fast and there are lots of blastbeats), deep growls, lots of guitar solos. Lyrics are mainly about Death, Gore, Pain or anti-Christianity. The genre was started by Possessed in 1985. Other Death Metal bands are: Morbid Angel, Immolation, Obituary.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Melodic Death Metal (also known as Gothenburg Metal) Not as violent as pure Death Metal lyrically nor musically. Less speed, more melody, catchy song structures. Sometimes clean vocals are used. Keyboards and alternative sounds may have a role as well. Examples: In Flames, Dark Tranquillity.
- Death/Thrash Metal Death Metal with Thrash riffage. Examples: Carnal Forge, Darkane.
- Death/Black Metal - Creative Death Metal, with atmosphere. Examples: Behemoth, Zyklon.
Doom Metal Extremely atmospheric, heavy, slow and depressive genre. Lyrics can be about anything. Its very varied and opened in many levels. Doom Metal bands are: Candlemass, While Heaven Wept, Solitude Aeturnus. Unusual instruments (for Metal that is) can be heard often, like organs or violins. Black Sabbath is considered proto-Doom because their slower songs set the basis for what would later become this genre.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Doom/Death Metal Morbid and slow Doom Metal with Death Metal breakdowns and growls. Examples: My Dying Bride, Swallow The Sun, Mourning Beloveth.
- Doom/Gothic Metal Doom with Gothic infleences. Examples: Draconian, early Lacrimas Profundere.
- Stoner/Doom Metal Heavier and faster Doom Metal. Examples: Sleep, Electric Wizard.
- Funeral Doom Metal The most atmospheric style ever. Vocals are mainly growls. The music screams suicide from every single note. Examples: Shape Of Despair, Pantheοst, Skepticism.
- Drone Doom Metal - As slow and heavy as music can be. Examples: Sunn O))), Esoteric.
- Doom/Black Metal Suicidal Black Metal. Examples: Forgotten Tomb, Dolorian.
Folk Metal Heavy Metal combined with Folk music. Examples: Cruachan, Falkenbach.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Folk/Black Metal Folk metal with Black Metal song structures and rage. Examples: Ensiferum, Windir.
Gothic Metal Soft, dynamic and melodic Metal, full of melancholy. Female vocals and keyboards appear often, making it the less aggressive Metal style. Examples: Moonspell, Crematory, Lacuna Coil.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Symphonic Gothic Metal Gothic Metal filled with Symphonic arrangements and operatic vocals. Examples: Tristania, Therion, Within Temptation.
- Gothic/Black Metal Gothic Metal with some aggressiveness. Examples: Cradle Of Filth, Graveworm.
- Gothic/Melodic Death Metal Gothic with Melodic Death influences, especially in the guitars work. Examples: Insomnium, Lilitu.
Grindcore Basically 80s Hardcore + 80s Death Metal. Speed is essential, blastbeats (a pulverizing, mechanical strobing of the snare drum, punctuated by the hasty rolls around the drum set) are essential, vocals are incomprehensible, solos are practically inexistent, songs are normally less then 3 minutes. Examples: Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer. This genre is sometimes sub divided according to the lyrical content of a band, which doesnt mean there are different genres of Grindcore.
Heavy Metal Duh, its Heavy Metal. Examples: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest.
Industrial Metal Metal with lots of distortion, rhythm, futuristic atmospheres and industrial sounds. Examples: Fear Factory, Static-X.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Industrial/Death Metal Industrial Metal with growls and more speed. Examples: Scarve, Strapping Young Lad.
Metalcore Post Thrash Metal with Hardcore influences. Examples: Chimaira, Unearth.
Nu Metal Simplistic and basic Metal with Rap influences. Short songs, catchy chorus, meaningless lyrics. Examples: Korn, Slipknot, Deftones.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Gothic Nu Metal - Nu Metal with Gothic influences. Examples: Evanescence.
Power Metal A softer version of Heavy Metal with more solos and diversity. Lyrically its mainly about fantasy or fiction. Examples: Helloween, Stratovarius.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Symphonic Power Metal Power Metal with symphonic elements. Examples: Nightwish, After Forever, Avantasia.
- Extreme Power Metal Power Metal with growls and faster riffs. Examples: Children Of Bodom, Norther, Wintersun.
Progressive Metal A mix of Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock. Features long compositions with complicated structures and highly professional instrumental parts, concept albums and intellectual lyrics. Examples: Dream Theater, Fates Warning.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Progressive Power Metal Power Metal with the typical tempo changes and musical exploration that characterizes Progressive Metal. Examples: Symphony X, Angra.
- Progressive Death Metal Progressive Metal with Death Metal parts. Examples: Opeth, Meshuggah.
- Pychedelic Metal Dark Progressive Metal. Examples: Deadsoul Tribe, Porcupine Tree.
- Experimental Progressive Metal Also known as Space Metal. Atmospheric and experimental Progressive Metal. Examples: Ayreon, Star One.
Sludge Metal Metal with growls, lots of distortion and noisy sounds, inspired by Grindcore and Death Metal, sometimes slow, sometimes more progressive. Examples: Cult Of Luna, Crowbar, Mastodon.
Thrash Metal Aggressive, fast and with rythm. Guitars are the most important instrument, lots of solos and riffs. Lyrics are normally about society. Examples: early Metallica, Slayer, Kreator.
Sub styles/combinations:
- Death/Thrash Metal read above.
- Black/Thrash Metal read above.
- Post Thrash Metal Groovy Thrash Metal, similar to Nu Metal but with intense riffage, solos and no Alternative influences. Examples: Machine Head, The Haunted, Lamb Of God.
