The death penalty's been in the news a lot recently; in the UK, some people were asking for it when a woman police officer was killed; meanwhile the US just executed its 1,000th convict since 1976 (when it started killing people again). The protests against that milestone execution mirrored a general wavering in the support for the death penalty in the US. What's your opinion on the death penalty though?

1,000 is a pitifully small number for a country of 300,000,000. I can't see why people are compaining.

Honestly, I don't really care about the death penalty. I don't consider it wrong.

i totally agree with the death penalty if someone is wrong enough to kill someone they should be killed, obviously not in all cases for example accidentally running someone over in a car. but purposely shooting somebody, they should be put to death!!

It's working on the principle that 2 wrongs make a right, which most people are taught is incorrect when they are five. BUt then, in a way prison is a 'wrong'

I'm against the death penalty personally, because it's an irreversable thing. Prisoners can be released if they win when new evidence comes up years later, but dead people can't be brought back to life

my fundamental belief that murder is wrong doesn't just apply to my own morality: if I shouldn't do it then neither should my government. The only taking of another human being's life I will EVER condone is if it's in self-defense. If you have the murderer behind bars he's not a threat, i.e. it's no longer self-defense and you can't stoop to his level and kill him. It also gives him absolutely no chance of rehabilitation.

imo 20 years of anal pummeling would be much worse punishment than death.

very naive....there are some people are better off dead ,bin laden would you prefer him in a cell or kicking at the end of a rope, the 2 bastards who stuck the ice pick thru that poor lads skull.the death penalty is a must,it may not be a deterent to some but better them executed than being free in 15 years.

ps where is it
na my case is rested as it is won, surely only a fool or a terrorist would go against my findings.tell me what the bitter taste of defeat is like, for i can taste only the sweetness of victory.abuse me more to your folly as it only strengthens my resolve, you weak inept cretinous pondlife

i will say no more on the matter until I see fit, rather like the lord of the manor throwing scraps to the uneducated peasants.now scurry away to your inadequate brothels of lower learning. for you cease to amuse me

yeh... and we should cut the hands off thieves and stone adulterers, then we would all feel better and society would be a much better place! We have to fight for standards in human rights if we want to fight the fundamentalists' agenda in the long term as well as the short term.

Also, if you kill someone like Bin Laden, you make a Martyr out of him

People who commit crimes to a certain extent should be executed, I think. But then again, some murderers have tendencies to "just kill" or some have mental brain disorders. It's really hard to tell, even though the justice has changed eg. sexism is almost erased from the courts. But for some crimes like drug smuggling is just stupid. Some common sense would come in handy. I think if they were to drug smuggle, they'd probably have some kind of problem with their money reserves.

if there's even a vague chance the offender will feel guilt they shouldn't be killed, they should have to suffer a guilty conscience

i think offenders should be locked in dark holes barely big enough for one person and nobody should talk to them

then hopefully they'll go mad

Yes.... making murderers mad.... good tactic. Then they'll DEFINATELY never kill again....

Disagree with it, since it's cheaper to just let them rot in jail.

How is it cheaper to put people in jail than to carry out a death sentence?

If they're put in jail you have to pay for food, clothes, etc. Death penalty all you need is a bit of rope

The death penalty is more expensive than putting someone in jail for life.

I refuse to believe that.

How the hell does that work?
