Student vs. teacher.

personally i prefer vai. although satriani is great, he generally stays within the boundaries. he generally always just plays simple rhythm --> cool lead --> bluesy solo. also his picking is quite poor. don't get me wrong, hes a great guitarist.

Vai, on the other hand, is fucking INSANE!!! listen to passion and warfare, that album has so many colours and styles that you can never expect what a song or solo would be like. i love him. and a lot of his playing is quite weird, but he is really a SICK guitarist. if you've seen crossroad or downloaded "eugene's trick bag" (which is taken from the film) you can just see his technical ability, which he doesnt exactly show in a lot of his music because he generally just plays fun stuff.

i prefer satriani cos he's like a vocalist but uses his guitar instead of his voice

vai i feel tries to be too impressive technically and whilst he is good at it, in my opinion he sometimes sacrifices the feel of the music

it'd be nice to have some opinions as well as votes just to give some indication of why you voted a certain way / aren't wrecking the poll

i have passion and warfare, alien love secrets and sex and religion. the first 2 are instrumental and are both amazing. alien love secrets may be more catchy and accessible, but after a few listens passion and warfare was definitely my fave. sex and religion has vocals, and is less interesting imo. it sounds quite normal, as opposed to most crazy vai albums.

surfing with the alien floats my proverbial boat, and satch boogie has a very funky riff. maybe i havent heard enough by steve vai, i cant choose between them for technique but i just prefer the satch choons ive heard.

voted WTF - despite having heard a bit of their stuff, I'm neither a fan, nor do I know much about them.
