Following the appalling abduction and rape of a 3 year old girl, what should we do with the assaillent. Is it to be rehabilitation and therapy, or severe punishment?

What kind of punishment would suit this crime? Perhaps sitting in a cell watching tv or playing games. A recent case, involving a sex offender, ended with the European so called Human Rights people allowing him to have porn videos in his cell. You couldn't make it up, could you? perhaps that might teach him a lesson. I think natural life in prison is the answer for this guy, then we don't have to worry about rehabilitation and therapy, which doesn't allways work anyway.

JUst because it doesn't work, doesn't mean you shouldn't try. I think a lengthy prison term, with the prospect of rehabilitation is fair - though no release, or a strict conditional one if there is a risk of re-offense

Someone who's sick enough to do that is probably too fucked up to be rehabilitated, and the thought of that person walking the streets freely disgusts me. Lock them up, throw away key.

Putting someone in prison takes away human rights, so its not the case that the state puts the protection of their human rights before the interests of law abiding citizens. It just refuses to degrade itself to their level by doing unspeakable things (for example, as some would have it, to 'put in holes in the ground with nothing but their thoughts and shit to eat'). A fucked up government breeds fucked up people.

As for the rapists, they're fucked up beyond belief. But that very fact means that i dont think making an example of them by being particularly vindictive and brutal to them will dissuade other people so fucked in the head they'd be prepared to rape three-year-olds; their brains are warped and wont respond to that as we'd expect them to. But there is evidence on the other hand that they can be rehabilitated and set straight. So let's face it, getting medieval on their ass is a particularly useless way of satisfy your bloodlust with some half-assed, poorly thought-through justification of 'they deserved it'. They're monsters, but you're not. Save the bloodlust for videogames.

why do they deserve that chance? how useful are they gonna be once they've been set straight?

i never disagreed with you about how unbelievably bad a crime it is. But it would also be a mistake to, as paddy says, 'kill them all'. As for your comment about it not being worth it to rehabilitate them because they'll be of negligible use to you/the government/society, i'm gonna ignore that.
