And FC whether one lot dresses up and makes a bigger show [catholic] than the other matters not a jot to me, its all about gangs........ there's only one God but my gang worships him better than yours, you know the score.

catholicism is a lot more liberal than it used to be. its just a lot more traditionally and not so progressive. its reforming very quickly. just 50 years ago all catholic masses were done in latin and so forth. protestantism is much more reactive and defensive.
liberal protestantism, such as that proposed by paul tillich, is what appeals most to me on this issue, because a lot of catholic doctrine has no precedent, biblical or otherwise, and so is really indefensible. but whatever. i can't be arsed to write more about either of them.

Also, protestants are less sexist/homophobic, etc, more liable to adapt to modern concerns such as abortion & contraception, have fewer moronic views such as transubstasiation and the stupid idea of confession
Atheism is probably more passé nowadays, and also probably more popular. Lots of people put themselves down as say Christian on their census forms, even though they never go to church, pray, and dont really believe. Also, it's all about the agnostocism

i don't think it really makes a difference when changes came about in the church...i mean, protestantism may have been founded with an english bible etc etc, but bear in mind this happened 1500 years after the life of christ so it doesn't really have the authenticity of the first christian religion on its side.
and ideas such as transubstantion and confession may sound stupid to an atheist, but not really any more so that fundamental teachings of just about any other religion, and i think its incredibly conceited and frankly stupid to insult other peoples' faiths.
and agnosticism isn't at all passé. its never really been in vogue.

In the UK certainly on issues such as gay marriage and women priests protestants are far more liberal. Also, when the changes and devlopments are made does make a difference do of course make a differnece.
Just because a country has rapid development in recent years, it can still be behind an MEDC in terms of it's economic strength, and that rapid growth may not be sustained in the future (that's a metaphor btw, not me going cmopletely off-topic) and the new pope is certainly not likely to be setting the catholics on a liberal slope is he? More likely the opposite.
