this was inspired by the discussion i've been having with bradley in a different thread

in the film 'The Matrix', Neo has to choose between two pills, red and blue, the red one (which he chooses) takes him out of the matrix and teaches him the truth that humans all live in vats and what we perceive as reality is actually not real. the blue one leaves him in the matrix, ignorant of this fact.

personally i'd choose blue, mainly because i'd rather lead a completely unfulfilling but nevertheless happy life than one where i possess greater knowledge but have to live off slop with machines constantly trying to rip me apart.

sure your life has meaning if you choose the red pill, but what use is meaning if you're unhappy

basically my life is run on apathy, things happen so it doesn't concern me why, i'm more concerned about how i will react because they have happened, and i'm sure that there will be some very strong arguments for taking the red pill but there you have it, i choose blue

i'd totally choose the blue pill.

the only thing that may sway me is the possibilities you have when you live beyond the matrix, like jumping really high and flying and being strong etc.

but bear in mind that you'd have been offered the red pill so you'd know there was something special about the world and you'd be eternally curious about the option you turned down and it would ruin your ignorant life. and would you really want your entire life to be a lie anyway?

Yes, I think it does, like the flash light in MIB, only without the epilepsy part, I guess.

I would choose the red pill. I would never be able to choose ignorance.

i think morpheus actually said the blue pill was just a sugar sweet that made no difference. the red one was special though. so you would remember if you took the blue one.

Nah, he says something to the effect that "you'll wake up in your own bed and it'll all seem like a dream".

a) I think the blue pill makes you forget
B) it all depends what ur current life is like. If I were a little kid getting repeatedly beaten by my dad or whatever, i'd take the red pill, but as it is i'm happy with my life, so no

so the majority of people here would sacrifice what they have now in exchange for an uncertain future?

yep. my life would have a real purpose to it if i took the red pill. behind 'behind the stage', knowing the reality, and having something to fight for, would give me a better life, despite the material discomforts (potato sack clothes, gruel for food) - plus, you can plug back in whenever you want, or even plug yourself into matrixes of your choosing - e.g. the woman in the red dress program

but you wouldn't know about being able to plug back in

having said that, if i'd gone through all the shit before with the bug and stuff i'd probably end up taking the red pill because otherwise it's a bit of an anticlimax

and the only reason he was at the point making the decision was because he'd already started looking for the 'greater truth' or whatever you want to call it

Yeah, but you don't KNOW that for certain. It's all well and good after seeing the rest of the film - oooo you get special powers, etc, but had u not known that it's a completely different thing ur getting into. Also, if you took the blue pill, you forget it happened, so you wouldn't live your life wondering. If you did, then I'd probably be more tempted to take the red pill

they didn't say at any point, we're from outside the matrix

the closest you get is when morpheus says something like "i can show you what the matrix is"

but for all we know he could have just got up and opened a cupboard and there's 'the matrix' inside

surely the material discomforts themselves, being chased by the agents and the dangers in the real world (robots and shit) would make for a pretty shit life?

and knowledge itself isnt necessarily good. knowing the reality in this case is pretty depressing.
