I think the main problem with uni's is the courses. I am currently doing computing at uni which is basically everything to do with computers I'm learning C++, Java, everything .NET, Oracle, networking, system analysis and computer architecture thats just been my 1st year so far. A rather long week and I actually have to put some effort in outside of class :P I seem to find most the girls I meet at uni are doing courses like dance, media, drama, and theater studies........now I don't mean to say they arnt real courses maybe they are but they all sound bollocks to me don't see how there even going to pay back there student loans in all honesty :P

I think sociology is probably a real subject. Less so film studies

If you don't do something fairly specialised at Uni it can get difficult to get a good job after.

Courses like Accountancy, Engineering, Science, Medicine etc are always good. They are more suited to going directly into the workplace. Doing English or History is ok if you want to be a teacher, but otherwise you could have your work cut out.

I disagree. The point of getting a non-vocational degree is that it gives you skills, whether it's being good with numbers or good at writing long analysises. Employers then look at the degrees you have, what skills you therefore have, and therefore whether or notthey want someone with those skills in theor employment

Well I guess it would easy getting into uni, just more difficult to get the "prestigious" courses like becoming a doctor, lawyer etc.

doing law or medicine isn't necessarily more prestigious at all. some real dumbass kids try at both (admittedly, they usually fail), whereas if you're doing something like english at oxford or cambridge it shows a great deal of intelligence because the courses are so hard to get on to.

i think its interesting to note that the official "brainiest kid in britain" after last years A-levels, where he got 16 As, is doing classics at oxford. but i doubt he'll have much trouble finding a job - whereas someone who gets a 2-2 in law from luton probably will.

Sure maybe if you're in oxford or cambridge you'll get a job purely by association, but imagine someone who get a 1-1 in Luton at English. I would say they would struggle to find a job. Just think of the poor fucker who got a 2-1 in English at Luton. Good luck.

When I was in college we all thought we'd just walk into jobs after because we had a degree. You'll find the accountants, lawyers, doctors and scientists will get some sort of a job easily enough (the level of which depending on their degree) but the Arts students don't get slagged about working in McDonalds for nothing.

They can be seriously intelligent but just find there aren't the jobs to suit them out there. Maybe just for the top 10%. I'm not slagging off students of the Arts, I'm just warning you that the real world isn't as rosy as it may seem.

by 'the Arts' what exactly do you mean? If you literally mean an art degree, then fair enough, but if you mean an English one, i disagree

i think it does depend to a large extent on where you went to university. if you go to a good one, you shouldn't have THAT much trouble, no matter what course. of course, some might make it easier to get a job than others (e.g. there is a bigger need for people qualified with maths/chemistry/physics etc).

if you go to Oxbridge, London (KCL, UCL, Imperial, LSE), Durham, Warwick then i don't think its too tricky...

but somewhere like luton you might as well not have bothered going, regardless of what grade you get.

Today I've accepted Portsmouth as my firm choice, with Southampton insurance. I think it's quite likely I'll be off to Southampton but that's all good either way.
This is the modern way.
