Yeah.

Squad announced yesterday, so I thought it's about time for a thread like this. Even if you aint a fan of football, if you're English it'll be fockin MENTAL if we win.

Of yesterday's news...Walcott-the shock selection. I'm happy we've not reverted to a striker who's already been proven that he's not good enough (Beattie, Heskey etc), but at the same time it's a massive gamble. I've seen the kid play for Southampton, and he's really small and quick, but didn't really make a huge impression against us (Argyle) in the 20 minutes he was on for.

Lennon I'm pleased with, Wright Phillips hasn't played enough for Chelsea this year, and I';ve never really seen the hype about him. If his "daddy" wasn't Wrighty then I don't think he'd have gotten as far as he has.

Otherwise, Hargreaves aside, a pretty standard squad.

I think we'll win it-I really do. :)

Bradders, you supporting England or the frogs this time?

30(odd) days to go!
This is the modern way.

I think we will make it through the group stages get a team like Brazil in the knockout stage, get smashed, come home......but meh time will tell I'll still be down the pub every day supporting them till the end :)

I think he should have picked Bent over Walcott. There saying hes a good weapon because they don't know him but we don't know him either.

I think Joe Cole will do well up front, he's good on the ball and now he seems to have been working harder on improving his upper body has extra power.

I think England have been roasted by Rooney and Owen's injuries. Will they be able to play? Imo it looks doubtful. Sven's taken a HUGE risk with the 17 yo, and I think he should have put another striker in just in case, maybe leaving out a midfielder

Having said that, I ain't exactly a huge football fan

Ok so called Sven, is this a sick joke, 2 invalids a useless prat and a child, up front. It's now a complete waste of time for England to even bother to turn up. By the way get on Germany at 7/1 they WILL win the World Cup, oh yes.
You can't handle the truth.

we'll just score from the midfield. We do have some of the world's best there, so why not. If our strikers can be pacy and just run interference all the time, opening up gaps for lampard or joe cole to spank it through, we'll be fine.

I'm backing England to win.
I've obv got a soft spot for France too, but I've never backed them in a tournament over England (when they're still in the competition), and I'm not about to start when they've got a pants team and a total dickhead of a manager (Domenech).

I think taking defoe instead of hargreaves might have been smarter, but i can't really see bent cutting the proverbial mustard on the world stage (despite his premiership success) so i think his omission is fair enough.

Walcott may be unknown but has a level head on him by all accounts and may well rise to the big occassion a la Owen and Rooney of years past. Desperate times call for desperate measures and i think Sven is essentially attempting to gamble between winning or early knockout; if he picks bent and defoe we're probs looking at the 1/4s or semis but not necessarily any further, lacking top quality up front.

Despite the numerous plastic Westcountry scousers abundant among the pubs of Plymouth today, Anton Ferdinands' face made me want Liverpool to win.

I'd still have taken Ashton though, the best player I've ever seen by miles (in the flesh).

What a fucking great game though. Gerrard's goal was incredible!

Aye, just spanked it into the bottom corner. Hope he does that for England.

I thought Liverpool just about deserved to win; West Ham only scored via an own goal, a keeping error and a complete fluke.

from what I saw, west ham played extremely well. And scoring three goals against liverpool isn't an easy task. great match.

I also agree with ashton or bent instead of crouch

Looks like rooney will be fit!

It'll be massive if he does get fit in time, I think we'll still be there or abouts even without him but with him fully firing we're different gravy.

I'm hoping Portugal doesn't win it. I don't want Scolari to have the satisfaction of winning a competition righteously.
