I've seen CoCa referred to (and even call themselves) 'prog rock'. From what I've heard, they're absolutely nothing like it. Take 'Devil in Jersey City' for example. It's Jimmy Eat World-style emo! What the hell is prog about that?? Just because their albums are conceptual does [i]not[i] make them prog!

They think they're prog because their songs are all thematically related to some comic book, thus every album is a concept album which was a very prog thing to do. They're definitely emo though, although I do quite like some of their songs

So glad thort this would be a thread praising them at first.

There so emo it makes me want to cut myself or them. Mainly becuase the lead singers vocals annoy me.

just to clarify, mike, the comic book is based on the albums. they're taking it to the next level by actually making the concept album into another medium. hardcore.

just out of interest, is their new stuff any good? their old stuff was pretty good...but i've only heard welcome home off the new album. its ok.

I've never understood why they're called emo by so many people, they're more prog than emo, but very poppy. Sci-fi concept albums with multiple movements don't make then prog, but try listening to an album all the way through. The Willing Well (all 4 parts of it) are most definately prog.

As for his vocals being emo, what does that make Rush?

or try a song like 'the light and the glass' - 10 minutes long and with a definite progginess. they do lots of songs in multiple parts, too.

Does anyone here actually know what emo is?

Or was, would be a good start.

Rites Of Spring, Grey Matter?

Seriously guys this new application of the term emo is really superficial, emo was never about the looks but it just got quickly attached to the whole makeup thing. Rubbish.

COn'CA (hehe conker) are not emo, at all.

I know scenes change and the labels get moved. But the way that My Chem get called emo is just like "double yoo tee eff"

H'okay....I know someone in a very successful prog band and he's is a HUGE prog rock fan (personally don't get it myself but oh well:P) so let's clear a few things up.
The fact that their albums are conceptual DOES NOT make them prog. However they are a million miles from emo....in fact I have a stupidly clever reason why they are prog rock *deep breath* here goes:

Coheed and Cambria's music comes from a predominantely european tradition that draws on classical and (european) folk music rather than the blues and gospel traditions that created early American rock and roll.

Their music draws on the proggy legacy of bands like Rush, ELP and, with the blend of classical and rock sounds, Gabriel and Hackett-era Genesis. The standard of musicianship the band displays - alongside the theatrical sensibility to light and shade - far out-stretch the expectations of emo and the 4/4 rock 'n' roll of the majority of contemporary rock and metal bands (psuedo-punks - this means you too!).

For the record the above about out-stretching emo expectations are not my personal opinions.
I love the girls who hate to love because they're just like me

SITUATIONS ARE IRRELEVANT NOW!

I think they're pretty awesome , but don't know wether they should be labelled Prog or Emo at all.

Just because the guys voice mimics the sounds of some emo singers of the past and perhaps has a little bit of a "wine" to it does not exactly define which genre they should be in... I understand why they call themselves prog rock and I also understand why people think it sounds emo.

They're not emo, they're prog. Their last album, Good Apollo II, is kinda metalish.
My head hurts, have you seen it?
