According to research from the National Consumer Council, more than half of British consumers are infringing copyright law by copying CDs onto their computers, iPods or other MP3 players.

Basically, what's being proposed here is that it ought to be legal for you to make personal copies of the CDs you buy. Makes sense, no?

Ripping cds onto tour computer, putting in on mp3 players, etc is fine, and should be.

It's when you get into the idea f copying cds that it becomes more debatable

why?
na my case is rested as it is won, surely only a fool or a terrorist would go against my findings.tell me what the bitter taste of defeat is like, for i can taste only the sweetness of victory.abuse me more to your folly as it only strengthens my resolve, you weak inept cretinous pondlife

i will say no more on the matter until I see fit, rather like the lord of the manor throwing scraps to the uneducated peasants.now scurry away to your inadequate brothels of lower learning. for you cease to amuse me

I think if you intend to sell the copies it's bad but just copying them for your own use shouldn't be illegal. Persoanally when I buy a new cd I immediatly copy it and put the original away. CDs are too damn delicate.

If not, they should allow free exchanges for damaged cds. If they don't, they can't realistically expect us not to copy.

I think making copies for yourself should make ZERO difference to the record labels in theory - I doubt there's a big market of people buying spare copies of the albums they buy. It's not like by making a copy, you are taking money from the artist or label. It's when that copy is used by a friend so that they don't have to buy the album - that's where the copyright is infringed and the company loses money; that's where the law should lie. But I think it's a lot easier to prove that you copied your CD, and legally more difficult to prove that you broke copyright with it - so they go for the more powerful (eaier to prove) law to save themselves some hassle in the courts.

i completely agree with you Zenabi. i personally make copies of cds that i really listen to, i keep the originals at home where theyre nice and safe and bring the copies with me in the car where it doesnt matter if they get scratched.

CDs arent all that fragile - have you ever tried snapping one? and it doesnt take that much care to avoid scratching.

then again i think most people are incapable of handling a cd with common sense... the majority of cds that i lent to friends in england came back in pretty poor state.. cases cracked, booklets shredded etc. the worst was a dvd that i can only assume that our long named sri lankan friend lent to his mum to use as a cutting board. no kidding. afterwards i couldnt watch one of the tracks anymore because it kept skipping.

thankfully in japan most people are as anal as me when it comes to taking care of cds.. even in used CD shops you wont find anything with as much as a fingerprint. (i hate fingerprints on booklets.)

oh yeah, to be on topic.. making copies for yourself is pretty unnecessary. you buy cds in order to listen to the cd. not to burn another copy and store away the original. and its not your birthright to have lifetime access to the music even if you destroy the original. its the same as any other product that can break after time (tv, car, anything). if you break it, you buy a new one. common sense.

on the other hand, making copies for other people is a problem (for record companies). and theres no way to stop that.

in the state that i live the heat is a destroyer for all things left in a car so i dont want to always have to go back out and buy the cd all over again. id rather just keep the original for listening in the house.

fair enough if you wana do that. but being able to do that (at least without being sued) is a privilege, not a right. record companies shouldnt be obliged to provice you with new cds once your car melts your old ones.

Putting them on your pc is fine... It's the only reason I buy CD's... But copying is a tad fucked up.

dosent matter if its legal or not, im gunna keep doing it
if i want to spread around a new band or something, ill copy one of my cds and give it to someone
opposed to lending away a cd and hoping it dosent get scratched or something
