Sign in here, say a little about what you've been up to, and rejoin the clan.

Dave....IN. :P

I've been getting drunk regularly. I've put on weight. I didn't come onto RFN because....I've not needed to do any essays until now. Bit overloaded at the moment tho...DOES PRISON WORK? its a fascinating debate, and I'm sure paddy will have plenty of wrong opinions on it all.

Cmon golden auldies...where are yer?

Ever served time Patrick?

I thought not. Prisons are overcrowded, cramped and miserable. As it is criminals are being even further alienated from society, and worsening conditions will only make them less likely to adhere to societys rules.

We need to provide more Rehabilitation measures, more day to day responsibility, more opportunity if we really want to lower re-conviction rates in this country. Prison doesn't deter crime...1 in 500 crimes see a prison sentence. Even I'm tempted by those odds and I'm middle class.

Yeah uh, I agree with Paddy. They need to be worsened. No A/C(if they even have it) just holes in solid concrete walls and bars, extremely stiff beds, few sinks and toilets, no recreation, no outside time(like an area outside the walls), and in dry miserable places. They need to suffer. But then give them all their civil rights back when they get out.

As for me, I'm car searching and still thinking the worlds out to get me. Oh, I'm getting drunk and stoned on the weekends and smoking during the week.

How long have you been here? And you've still not learnt that paddys far right totalitarian views are unfounded and invariably wrong.

pure poppycock, how do you decide if a con has been rehabilitated.do you think that all cons should be released if they are deemed rehabilitated,or not so if they are not even if thier sentence is over?

Y'aight mate.

Rehabilitation is the state we should be aiming for after punitive measures have been carried out. Are they going to commit crime again? Can they add in some way to society? Does Prison achieve anything but incapacitation? No.

speedy das wunder snail, I'm sure there are men out there for you with big shlongs than paddy.

uh...like a year now...

and paddy happens to be right on this one. they are where they are because they fucked up, we're not trying to let them get away from bills and work, we're trying to teach them a lesson.

Can they commit crime again? Yes
Can they add in some way to society? Maybe, they will have to prove themselves worthy though
Does Prison achieve anything but incapacitation? Yes, it currently lets them do what they love. Eat, Sleep, Fight, Shit, housed properly, and best of all....IT'S FREE!!!!

Fuck that.

Paddy is never right. Prison costs 40k per person every year, and what does it achieve ultimately. And Shaggy Dog, or whatever the fuck you are, doesn't possession of Cannabis mean a prison sentence over there? I'll advocate your changes if you're sent down.

How's uni Dave?

I'm at LSE doing Philosophy and Economics. It's dull and too much reading. But work is paying for it and I can obliterate myself with alcohol so it's not too bad.
