For those of you wanting something that bit more edgy for your indie needs (and despite the comments that follow i want to stress that this band ARE infact indie)

The name of them is Godspeed You Black Emperor, and i know few of you learned people out there will have heard of them, but for the benefit of those that havent i am advising you to check out the album "F# A# Infinity".

Each of the tracks on this work of art stretch for between 18-26 minutes, but i hasten to add there are only three of them on it.

Heavy and apocalyptic, but with meaningful lyrics and use of strings that blow the mind.

If there truely is going to be the end of the world at some point, i pray that this is the soundtrack they use (AND IT IS INDIE, NOT INSANE SWEDISH DEATH METAL)

i've recently got into godspeed; not bad. I definitely agree that it is more art than entertainment. Worth listening if your attention span can take it, which may not be the case for all of you. Heavy on string instruments, it is music to fall asleep to, or to feel depressed to, etc. It's very deep music that rests heavy on the heart

'Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven' is a fantastic name, let alone album!

18-26 minutes? sounds like prog, not indie. the longest songs ive ENJOYED listening to all the way through are;
three minute warning - liquid tension experiment (28mins)
the odyssey - symphony x (24mins)
a change of seasons - dream theater (23mins)
divine wings of tragedy - symphony x (21mins)
2112 - rush (20mins)

and they all fall under 'prog'.

I think I listened to them a few years ago (mainly on the strength of their cool name) and thought they were shite.

May have another go on your recommendation tho.

Band name = Godspeed you black emperor, 18-26 minute long tracks, sounds like a load of pretentious wank to me. Still, maybe i'll listen to them one day and be proved wrong...

How about Apocalypse Please by muse?

Yep, totally agree, and the soundtrack to the Big Bang should be New Born, but seeing who my fave band is, I am just a tiny bit biased....

It is! I listen to a lot of long songs, many of them are as slooow as music can be, so potencially boring for the "common" listener, but I have to say that Godspeed You Black Emperor is extremely boring.
