Madchester reunited at last

RAVE ON: Bez and Shaun Ryder are set to return

THE Happy Mondays are back - and they can't wait for their homecoming gig.

The leaders of the Madchester scene in the early `90s will play in the city for the first time in five years at the M.E.N. Arena in October.

Frontman Shaun Ryder, 43, told the M.E.N: "It's going to be mad. We can't wait to get back on stage in Manchester. I still love the lifestyle but I cannot do the early mornings anymore. I am not the hellraiser I used to be.

"The last time we played Manchester it was at the M.E.N. Arena and it was excellent. The fans can expect the usual Mondays' madness. We will probably test a couple of new tracks out at Manchester alongside all the old classics."

Big Brother

Dancer Bez, fresh from his success as a reality TV contestant on Celebrity Big Brother, will also take the stage.

The band formed in Salford, in 1985 and signed to Tony Wilson's Factory Records. They rose to become one of the leaders of Manchester's emerging music scene alongside The Stone Roses.

Their third album, Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches, became a No.1 but the band split in the early 1990s.

Liverpool rockers The Farm will support them on Saturday, October 29.

Tickets, priced at £28.50, go on sale at 9am tomorrow. The special late licence gig will start at 7.30pm until 1am and will feature a line-up of special guest DJs. They will also play dates in London and Glasgow.

Tickets and details are available from SJM on 0871 2200 260, online at www.gigsandtours.com, from the M.E.N. Arena on 0870 190 8000 or from Piccadilly Box Office on 0161 832 1111.

Home run for the Mondays?
Dianne Bourne
THE Happy Mondays are eyeing a return to home turf as part of their latest comeback, I can reveal.

Rumour is that the band will stage a gig at the M.E.N. Arena in late October.

They already have a number of festival appearances lined up this summer and performed at a "Madchester" revival mini-gig at Brixton Academy last month.

But it seems that Shaun Ryder, Bez and co are desperate to get back to their home city.

The band has been holed up at the Turnmills club in London of late, where they have been using the basement studios to jam and record material.

A studio insider tells me: "They have been doing London shows, but I know what they really want is to make sure they go back to their home town.

"I know they're looking at a date at the M.E.N Arena, and, at the moment, it's looking like being in late October."

New album

Rumours are also rife that the band is finally recording material for a new album.

But my source says it is still very early days on that front.

"A lot of the band have been here in the studios, working on stuff for the live shows, such as a new intro to Step On, without Rowetta singing," he tells me.

"But there is no news on an album as yet.

"It may be that some new tracks could be aired in time for the shows they have planned for the summer.

"That's the way things are going and I know there are talks about an album, possibly, in future."

Meanwhile, I hear that Shaun will be busy filming a new pop video next week.

He was a guest vocalist on the track, Dare, by Gorillaz, the cartoon band fronted by Blur's Damon Albarn, and will make a guest appearance in the promotional video for the track.

It will be a bit of a novelty, for I hear that Shaun will be appearing in his full, human glory in the video, which will make him the first non-animated guest on a Gorillaz promo.

I will certainly be there will you?
