I'm gonna go (perhaps rather predictably) with Megadeth, because
1) they have the most interesting structures (Holy Wars),
2) the most interesting riffs (again, Holy Wars) and
3) have brought us some of the best guitarists in Metal (Chris Poland, Marty Friedman, Al Pitrelli) playing some of the most melodic (I'm not saying fastest or most technical) guitar solos in Thrash (Tornado of Souls, Dread and the Fugitive Mind, Symphony of Destruction).
All in all, for me the best Thrash band is Megadeth. Their recent album 'The System Has Failed' wasn't half bad either, and their tour was good. Saw them in Glasgow.

Second choise would be Kreator. They have evolved better then Slayer, I like "Enemy Of God" a lot more then "God Hates Us All", for example, but they don't have the same ammount of classic masterpieces, nor they are best techincally, even if they can play fast and even more brutal.
I honestly never liked Dave Mustaine as a vocalist and there are always songs I don't like in Megadeth's albums. Metallica are one of the most overrated Metal bands ever, their only very good album is "Ride The Lightning". Sepultura just have three songs: the brutal Death Metal influenced assault, the catchy with basic songwritting kind and the tribal ambient experience. Annihilator are extremely inconsistent. Anthrax are overrated, they made 2 great albums in the 80's and not much else.
Iced Earth is not Thrash Metal, they have some heavy riffage, but they are basically Heavy Metal with some epic moments (which doesn't make them Power Metal too).
All the rest range from "above average" to "very good" in my opinion, overall a good poll.

i disagree with the comment about there being musicianship but songwriting that doesnt match, i definitely think its the other way round. dave mustaine isnt a technically great guitarist, his style is quite simple yet i really enjoy his solos (maybe that is the definition of a good guitarist?). and to sing as well while playing complex riffs with perfect accuracy is something not many people can do.
and for me the songwriting beats any other thrash metal band.. i prefer melodic vocals to screaming/growling, and i prefer depth and emotion to simple aggression and power. so thats personal preference.
imo megadeth is the cleverest thrash metal band there ever was.
metallica just dont do it for me anymore. i used to love them but after listening to the music i listen to today, i just find them bland, simplistic and shallow, and the musicianship just isnt there. ride the lightning is still a decent album though.
iced earth are rather good imo. true, they used to reuse old riffs and melodies but the songs themselves were great, especially songs like dante's inferno (an epic at 16:29) and pure evil. i do think old iced earth can be classified as thrash, its fast and brutal and jon schaffer is by far the fastest rhythm guitarist i have ever heard.
new iced earth seems a different band, although in my opinion equally good in a different way. but the newest album is more power metal than thrash so i'll skip that here.
i dont know anthrax much but i have fistful of metal, armed and dangerous and among the living. armed and dangerous is a great song and among the living is great fun to listen to, i'll definitely get some of their other albums.

rock you like a hurricane is a great song. i saw the scorps in march, and they were better than judas priest who they were supporting. klaus meine's voice was incredible, and i dont mean 'incredible considering hes 57 years old', it was incredible full stop. rudolf schenker had the coolest looking guitars, although he himself didnt look as cool as the rhythm guitarist.

turkish - good Iced Earth songs are "Stormrider", "Declaration Day" and "Dante's Inferno". Good Megadeth songs are "Holy Wars", "Hanger 18" and "Symphony of Destruction".

wat he sed. but those three megadeth songs, while possibly 3 of the best, dont give a good view of the wide spectrum that is megadeth's discography. theres too many good songs to name, so i'll send u (bob) some later.
but definitely tornado of souls because it has my favourite solo of all time.

as i thought, combination of musicianship, songwriting and popularity has given megadeth the edge here, and interesting that metallica and slayer have the same number of points. sepultura and iced earth got one each. fair enough, since people tend to have the impression that they are not pure thrash.
someone give testament the vote here! they may be a bit boring song-wise, but alex skolnick's guitar solos are out of this world, and eric peterson's eastern-sounding riffs are so cool!
NB it wasn't sandy cohen that liked scorpions, that was in the T4 mini sketch after the show. it was the magazine editor guy that was listening to scorpions when sandy went to see him, and sandy didnt even comment on it. although i would like to believe that sandy likes em too. \m/ SCORPIONS \m/ kicked Judas Priest's ass on tour baby, i agree with Eh Tommy there!
