which musician(s) influenced you to first pick up your instrument / did you try to emulate once you had an instrument
i know it's clichéd, but as a bassist my inspiration was flea, mainly because i was heavily into the chilis at the time and he's a general lej
others are duff mckagen (G'n'R) and stuart zender from jamiroquai for pretty much the same reasons

i know its a bit strange but although i loved people like jimmy page and muse and nirvana (back then) and deep purple, none of these were what made me pick up the guitar. of course i wanted to be like them and all but i thought this was just a completely unrealistic dream (referring to blackmore and page etc, not nirvana and muse).
what made me want to buy a guitar was my good friend jun. i went to his house and was like woah, a guitar. woah, that is the coolest thing ever. woah its like white in the middle and black on the outside.
he taught me how to play the main riff to 'plug in baby' and that was it, i went home and practiced it on an old classic guitar noone played and a few weeks later my dad bought me a squier strat and a lil amp.
much to my disappointment, jun stopped playing a while later. but about a year ago, apparently i inspired him to start playing again. he sed he wanted to be able to play 'sick shit' like I do.
in terms of guitarists ive wanted to be... there are many but marty friedman and michael romeo are those who ive wanted to be the most. marty friedman's style is incredibly original and tasteful and simply beautiful. michael romeo is just magical. but ive never realistically thought i could ever be these guitarists or even have their style. kiko loureiro is another recent addition.
the guitarists ive actually tried to emulate are yngwie malmsteen and john petrucci. however i havent tried that hard or spent much time on it. i try not to just sound like ONE guitarist, ideally i want to take in certain techniques from all my favourite and mix it up and then develop it to make my own. but thats gona take time, i dont expect it to happen anytime soon (5-10 years?).

For me it was Yasmin Bleeth on Baywatch that first inspired me to pick up my instrument, and I haven't looked back since.

Phil Pearson inspired me to take up air guitar and I've been shredding since.

a record of two meaningful posts!!
but phil is a shred master on the air guitar, there's no doubt about it
also i think felipe andreoli (angra) deserves a mention but seeing as i've only just come across him he's hardly an inspiration, and also i find it hard to judge bass players, it's obvious when they're crap but they tend not to have as much flashy shit going on so i just rate them on coolness most of the time (hence flea)
